BOROBUDUR, THE LARGEST BUDDHIST TEMPLE IN THE WORLD
u    Borobudur sanctuary in the breathtakingly beautiful rural heartland of Central Java.
u    It is an hour’s drive from Jogyakarta airport, and a picturesque two-hour drive from Solo Airport on the more scenic route which passes some of the biggest volcanoes in Java.
u    There are direct flights to Jogyakarta everyday from Singapore and  to Solo three times a week from Singapore, and a twice-daily service from Kuala Lumpur.

u    The Borobudur sanctuary is one of the jewels of the world cultural heritage. A vast Buddhist monument in the form of a pyramid-shaped.
u    UNESCO launched an international campaign for its restoration in 1972.
u    Completed in 1983, the project, in which 27 countries took part, was the most important of its kind since the Nubian monuments campaign.
u    Borobudur was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991.

BOROBUDUR, A GIGANTIC STRUCTUR TEMPLE
u    In the 19th century, Dutch occupiers of Indonesia found a massive ancient ruin deep in the jungles of Java.
u    Rediscovered in 1814, the site was cleared of rubble and vegetation.
u    What  they discovered was the complex of Borobudur, a gigantic structure built with nearly 2 million cubic feet (55,000 m³) of stones.
u    The temple has nearly 2,700 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues

BOROBUDUR, A GIANT TEXTBOOK OF BUDDHISM
u    Until today, no one knows for sure when, why it was built, nor the reason for its complete abandonment hundreds of years ago.
u    Some scholars believe that Borobudur is actually a giant textbook of Buddhism, as its bas reliefs tell the story of the life of Buddha and the principles of his teachings.
u    To "read," a pilgrim must make his way through nine platforms and walk a distance of over 2 miles.

MORE THAN THOUSAND BUDDHIST MONK IN VESAK
u    A view of Borobudur temple is illuminated during Vesak Day, commonly known as 'Buddha's birthday', at the Borobudur
u    Annually, Buddhists in Indonesia celebrate Vesak which makes it the most visited tourist attraction in Indonesia.
u    It is observed during the full moon in May or June, with the ceremony centered at three Buddhist temples by walking from Mendut to Pawon and ending at Borobudur.

It was abandoned in the 14th century for reasons that still remain a mystery and for centuries lay hidden in the jungle under layers of volcanic ash

Both a shrine to Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage, Borobudur monument occupies a modest plateau and from the top gallery, beautiful views of Central Java are revealed.

Borobudur is best seen at dawn, when the air is fresh and full of birdsong. As the mist begins to lift, the sun scales the surrounding volcanoes and terraced fields, and highlights the stone reliefs and the many faces of Buddha.

Glimpsing Borobudur for the first time is often a deeply felt emotional experience. Later in the day, visits can be made to appreciate the historic and cultural context of this enduring monument
